Question 3 Oblique forces may cancel one component Force A is 10 N at 30◦above positive x. Force B is 10 N at 30◦below positive x. A B x The pair is symmetric about the x axis before B is reversed. (a) Find both component pairs. (b) Find the resultant. (c) How would the resultant change if B were reversed?

Question 3 - Solution Oblique forces may cancel one component A B x (a) Resolve with signed angles.⃗ A = 10(cos 30◦, sin 30◦) = (5 √ 3, 5) N,⃗ B = (5 √ 3, −5) N⃗ A = (5 √ 3, 5) N and⃗B = (5 √ 3, −5) N. (b) Sum along common axes.⃗ R =⃗A +⃗B = (10 √ 3, 0) N⃗ A +⃗B = (10 √ 3, 0) N, a 17.321 N force along positive x. (c) Reverse both components of B.⃗ Rreversed =⃗A + (−⃗B) = (0, 10) N⃗ A −⃗B = (0, 10) N, pointing along positive y. Reversal is not merely changing the sign of the angle; it changes the entire vector.
