Question 6 Three projections describe a spatial arrow A spatial displacement has perpendicular-axis components (Ax, Ay, Az) = (2, −3, 6) m. Let α, β, γ denote its angles with the positive x, y, z axes, each in [0◦, 180◦]. x y z (2, −3, 6) m Perspective schematic; dashed segments show a planar projection and the vertical rise. (a) Find the displacement magnitude and the length of its projection into the xy plane. (b) Find the three axis angles using Ax = A cos α and analogous relations. (c) Check the relation among the squared direction cosines. Explain why the angle with positive y is obtuse.

Question 6 - Solution Three projections describe a spatial arrow x y z (2, −3, 6) m (a) Separate a planar projection from the full arrow. Axy = √ 22 + (−3)2 = √ 13 m, A = √ 13 + 36 = 7 m The xy projection has length √ 22 + (−3)2 = √ 13 m. The full length is A = √ 13 + 62 = 7 m. A projection generally discards a component and is shorter than the original. (b) Normalize each projection to obtain its cosine. (cos α, cos β, cos γ) = 1 7(2, −3, 6), (α, β, γ) = (73.398◦, 115.377◦, 31.003◦) α = cos−1(2/7) ≈73.40◦, β = cos−1(−3/7) ≈115.38◦, and γ = cos−1(6/7) ≈31.00◦. These are three axis angles, not three independent planar bearings. (c) Check a necessary geometric identity. cos2 α + cos2 β + cos2 γ = 4 + 9 + 36 49 = 1, cos β < 0 ⇒β > 90◦ cos2 α + cos2 β + cos2 γ = (4 + 9 + 36)/49 = 1. The negative y projection requires cos β < 0, so β > 90◦. Using |Ay| in the cosine formula would lose the direction toward negative y.

Question 6

Three projections describe a spatial arrow

A spatial displacement has perpendicular-axis components (Ax,Ay,Az)=(2,−3,6)(A_x,A_y,A_z)=(2,-3,6) m. Let α,β,γ\alpha,\beta,\gamma denote its angles with the positive x,y,zx,y,z axes, each in [0∘,180∘][0^\circ,180^\circ].

  1. Find the displacement magnitude and the length of its projection into the xyxy plane.

  2. Find the three axis angles using Ax=Acos⁡αA_x=A\cos\alpha and analogous relations.

  3. Check the relation among the squared direction cosines. Explain why the angle with positive yy is obtuse.

Question 6 - Solution

Three projections describe a spatial arrow

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Separate a planar projection from the full arrow.

Axy=22+(−3)2=13m,A=13+36=7mA_{xy}=\sqrt{2^2+(-3)^2}=\sqrt{13}\,\mathrm m,\quad\boxed{A=\sqrt{13+36}=7\,\mathrm m} The xyxy projection has length 22+(−3)2=13\sqrt{2^2+(-3)^2}=\sqrt{13} m. The full length is A=13+62=7A=\sqrt{13+6^2}=7 m. A projection generally discards a component and is shorter than the original.

(b) Normalize each projection to obtain its cosine.

(cos⁡α,cos⁡β,cos⁡γ)=17(2,−3,6),(α,β,γ)=(73.398∘,115.377∘,31.003∘)(\cos\alpha,\cos\beta,\cos\gamma)=\tfrac17(2,-3,6),\quad(\alpha,\beta,\gamma)=(73.398^\circ,115.377^\circ,31.003^\circ) α=cos⁡−1(2/7)≈73.40∘\alpha=\cos^{-1}(2/7)\approx73.40^\circ, β=cos⁡−1(−3/7)≈115.38∘\beta=\cos^{-1}(-3/7)\approx115.38^\circ, and γ=cos⁡−1(6/7)≈31.00∘\gamma=\cos^{-1}(6/7)\approx31.00^\circ. These are three axis angles, not three independent planar bearings.

(c) Check a necessary geometric identity.

cos⁡2α+cos⁡2β+cos⁡2γ=4+9+3649=1,cos⁡β<0⇒β>90∘\cos^2\alpha+\cos^2\beta+\cos^2\gamma=\frac{4+9+36}{49}=1,\quad\cos\beta<0\Rightarrow\beta>90^\circ cos⁡2α+cos⁡2β+cos⁡2γ=(4+9+36)/49=1\cos^2\alpha+\cos^2\beta+\cos^2\gamma=(4+9+36)/49=1. The negative yy projection requires cos⁡β<0\cos\beta<0, so β>90∘\beta>90^\circ. Using |Ay||A_y| in the cosine formula would lose the direction toward negative yy.
