Question 8 Pressure level and intensity level depend on compatible references Define pressure level Lp = 20 log10(prms/p0) with p0 = 20 µPa, and intensity level LI = 10 log10(I/I0) with I0 = 10−12 W/m2. A progressive wave has prms = 0.020 Pa in a medium of impedance Z = 800 Pa s/m. pmrms I A progressive wave connects pressure and energy flux through the medium impedance. (a) Calculate both levels using I = p2 rms/Z. (b) Derive LI −Lp and find the impedance for which the two numerical levels agree.

Question 8 - Solution Pressure level and intensity level depend on compatible references pmrms I (a) Method and calculation The pressure ratio is 0.020/(20 × 10−6) = 1000, so Lp = 60.0 dB. But I = (0.020)2 800 = 5.0 × 10−7 W/m2, LI = 56.990 dB. (b) Interpretation and further calculation Subtract the logarithms explicitly: LI −Lp = 10 log10 ( p2 0 ZI0 ) . Equality requires Z = p2 0/I0 = 400 Pa s/m. At Z = 800, the difference is 10 log10(1/2) = −3.0103 dB. The pressure reference is fixed here for comparison; references must be stated when comparing different media. Physical check The difference is independent of measured pressure amplitude for fixed impedance and references.

Question 8 - Solution

Pressure level and intensity level depend on compatible references

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Method and calculation

The pressure ratio is 0.020/(20×10−6)=10000.020/(20\times10^{-6})=1000, so Lp=60.0dBL_p=60.0\,\mathrm{dB}. ButI=(0.020)2800=5.0×10−7W/m2,LI=56.990dB.I=\frac{(0.020)^2}{800}=5.0\times10^{-7}\,\mathrm{W/m^2},\qquad L_I=56.990\,\mathrm{dB}.

(b) Interpretation and further calculation

Subtract the logarithms explicitly:LI−Lp=10log⁡10(p02ZI0).L_I-L_p=10\log_{10}\left(\frac{p_0^2}{ZI_0}\right).Equality requires Z=p02/I0=400Pas/mZ=p_0^2/I_0=400\,\mathrm{Pa\,s/m}. At Z=800Z=800, the difference is 10log⁡10(1/2)=−3.0103dB10\log_{10}(1/2)=-3.0103\,\mathrm{dB}. The pressure reference is fixed here for comparison; references must be stated when comparing different media.

Physical check

The difference is independent of measured pressure amplitude for fixed impedance and references.
