Question 9 - Solution Crossing acoustic beams produce a transverse fringe spacing x y k+ k− (a) Method and calculation Using the cosine-sum identity, p = 2P cos(k sin θ y) cos(k cos θ x −ωt). Thus Ap(y) = 2P| cos(k sin θ y)|, and nodes satisfy k sin θ y = (m + 1 2)π. (b) Interpretation and further calculation The node spacing and first positive node are ∆y = λ 2 sin θ = 0.340 m, y0 = λ 4 sin θ = 0.170 m. As θ →0, the beams become parallel and their wave-vector difference tends to zero. Their phase difference then does not vary across y, so finite transverse fringes disappear. Physical check The spacing is controlled by the transverse wave-vector difference 2k sin θ, not by k alone.

Question 9

Crossing acoustic beams produce a transverse fringe spacing

Two equal-amplitude plane pressure waves have wave vectors 𝒌±=k(cos⁡θ𝒙̂±sin⁡θ𝒚̂)\mathbf k_\pm=k(\cos\theta\,\hat{\mathbf x}\pm\sin\theta\,\hat{\mathbf y}). Their source phases and frequencies are equal. Let λ=0.34m\lambda=0.34\,\mathrm m and θ=30∘\theta=30^\circ.

Question 9 - Solution

Crossing acoustic beams produce a transverse fringe spacing

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Method and calculation

Using the cosine-sum identity,p=2Pcos⁡(ksin⁡θy)cos⁡(kcos⁡θx−ωt).p=2P\cos(k\sin\theta\,y)\cos(k\cos\theta\,x-\omega t).Thus Ap(y)=2P|cos⁡(ksin⁡θy)|A_p(y)=2P|\cos(k\sin\theta\,y)|, and nodes satisfyksin⁡θy=(m+12)π.k\sin\theta\,y=(m+\tfrac12)\pi.

(b) Interpretation and further calculation

The node spacing and first positive node areΔy=λ2sin⁡θ=0.340m,y0=λ4sin⁡θ=0.170m.\Delta y=\frac\lambda{2\sin\theta}=0.340\,\mathrm m,\qquad y_0=\frac\lambda{4\sin\theta}=0.170\,\mathrm m.As θ→0\theta\to0, the beams become parallel and their wave-vector difference tends to zero. Their phase difference then does not vary across yy, so finite transverse fringes disappear.

Physical check

The spacing is controlled by the transverse wave-vector difference 2ksin⁡θ2k\sin\theta, not by kk alone.
