Question 8 - Solution A velocity graph counts signed turns t (s) ω 4 −2 2 3 (a) Derivation and calculation The straight-line velocity is ω(t) = 4 + −2 −4 3 t = 4 −2t, ω = 0 ⇒tr = 2 s. Its signed areas are A+ = 1 2(2)(4) = 4 and A−= −1 2(1)(2) = −1 rad. Hence ∆θ = A+ + A−= 3 rad , S = |A+| + |A−| = 5 rad . (b) Result and interpretation The reversal time and clockwise fraction are tr = 2 s , fCW = |A−| S = 1 5 = 0.20 . Equivalently, ∆θ = ∫3 0 ω dt but S = ∫3 0 |ω| dt. Question 8 - Solution

A velocity graph counts signed turns

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

The straight-line velocity is ω(t)=4+−2−43t=4−2t,ω=0⇒tr=2s.\omega(t)=4+\frac{-2-4}{3}t=4-2t,\qquad\omega=0\Rightarrow t_r=2\ \mathrm s. Its signed areas are A+=12(2)(4)=4A_+=\tfrac12(2)(4)=4 and A−=−12(1)(2)=−1A_-=-\tfrac12(1)(2)=-1 rad. Hence Δθ=A++A−=3rad,𝒮=|A+|+|A−|=5rad.\boxed{\Delta\theta=A_++A_-=3\ \mathrm{rad}},\qquad \boxed{\mathcal S=|A_+|+|A_-|=5\ \mathrm{rad}}.

(b) Result and interpretation

The reversal time and clockwise fraction are tr=2s,fCW=|A−|𝒮=15=0.20.\boxed{t_r=2\ \mathrm s},\qquad \boxed{f_{\mathrm{CW}}=\frac{|A_-|}{\mathcal S}=\frac15=0.20}. Equivalently, Δθ=∫03ωdt\Delta\theta=\int_0^3\omega\,dt but 𝒮=∫03|ω|dt\mathcal S=\int_0^3|\omega|\,dt.

Physical check

The clockwise segment cancels one radian of displacement while adding one radian of travel.
