Question 6 A nonlinear potential sets unequal-looking algebraic tasks A 2 kg particle moves on a line with U(x) = x4 + 2x2 J when x is in meters. At x=0 its speed is √ 3 m/s, directed right. This is the only interaction doing work. x U The even potential rises on both sides of its minimum; numerical turning points must be calculated. (a) Find total mechanical energy. Question 6 - Solution A nonlinear potential sets unequal-looking algebraic tasks x U (a) Evaluate the initial state. At the initial point, U(0) = 0: E = 1 2(2)( √ 3)2 + 0 = 3 J . (b) Reduce the turning equation. At a turning point, K = 0 and U = E. With z = x2, x4 + 2x2 = 3 ⇒z2 + 2z −3 = (z −1)(z + 3) = 0. The physical root is z = 1, giving x = ±1 m . (c) Recover K at the intermediate position. At x = .50 m, U = 1 16 + 1 2 = 9 16 J, K = 3 −9 16 = 39 16 J. v = √ 2K/m = √ 39 4 = 1.561 m/s . The other algebraic root x2 = −3 is impossible for a real coordinate.

Question 6

A nonlinear potential sets unequal-looking algebraic tasks

A 2 kg particle moves on a line with U(x)=x4+2x2U(x)=x^4+2x^2 J when x is in meters. At x=0 its speed is 3\sqrt3 m/s, directed right. This is the only interaction doing work.

Question 6 - Solution

A nonlinear potential sets unequal-looking algebraic tasks

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Evaluate the initial state.

At the initial point, U(0)=0U(0)=0: E=12(2)(3)2+0=3J.\boxed{E=\tfrac12(2)(\sqrt3)^2+0=3\ \mathrm J}.

(b) Reduce the turning equation.

At a turning point, K=0K=0 and U=EU=E. With z=x2z=x^2, x4+2x2=3⇒z2+2z−3=(z−1)(z+3)=0.x^4+2x^2=3\Rightarrow z^2+2z-3=(z-1)(z+3)=0. The physical root is z=1z=1, giving x=±1m\boxed{x=\pm1\ \mathrm m}.

(c) Recover K at the intermediate position.

At x=.50x=.50 m, U=116+12=916J,K=3−916=3916J.U=\frac1{16}+\frac12=\frac9{16}\ \mathrm J,\qquad K=3-\frac9{16}=\frac{39}{16}\ \mathrm J. v=2K/m=394=1.561m/s.\boxed{v=\sqrt{2K/m}=\frac{\sqrt{39}}4=1.561\ \mathrm{m/s}}. The other algebraic root x2=−3x^2=-3 is impossible for a real coordinate.
