Question 8 - Solution Two prescribed force magnitudes have a feasibility interval 7 N 3 N θ (a) Use parallel and opposite limits. |7 −3| ≤R ≤7 + 3 ⇒ 4 ≤R ≤10 N The magnitude lies in [|7 −3|, 7 + 3] = [4, 10] N. The endpoints correspond to opposite and same directions. (b) Use the cosine rule. cos θ = 82 −72 −32 2(7)(3) = 1 7, θ = 81.787◦ 82 = 72 + 32 + 2(7)(3) cos θ, so cos θ = 1/7 and θ ≈81.787◦. (c) Apply the lower bound. 2 N < Rmin = 4 N, 0 < Rmin Neither 2 N nor zero is reachable. Unequal magnitudes cannot cancel completely even when antiparallel.

Question 8 - Solution

Two prescribed force magnitudes have a feasibility interval

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Use parallel and opposite limits.

|7−3|≤R≤7+3⇒4≤R≤10N|7-3|\le R\le7+3\ \Rightarrow\ \boxed{4\le R\le10\,\mathrm N} The magnitude lies in [|7−3|,7+3]=[4,10][|7-3|,7+3]=[4,10] N. The endpoints correspond to opposite and same directions.

(b) Use the cosine rule.

cos⁡θ=82−72−322(7)(3)=17,θ=81.787∘\cos\theta=\frac{8^2-7^2-3^2}{2(7)(3)}=\frac17,\quad\theta=81.787^\circ 82=72+32+2(7)(3)cos⁡θ8^2=7^2+3^2+2(7)(3)\cos\theta, so cos⁡θ=1/7\cos\theta=1/7 and θ≈81.787∘\theta\approx81.787^\circ.

(c) Apply the lower bound.

2N<Rmin=4N,0<Rmin2\,\mathrm N<R_{\min}=4\,\mathrm N,\quad0<R_{\min} Neither 2 N nor zero is reachable. Unequal magnitudes cannot cancel completely even when antiparallel.
