Section 3-3 · Physics pages 352–353

Question 1 A component is a signed projection A displacement has magnitude 12 m and direction 150◦counterclockwise from the positive x axis. The axes are perpendicular, with east positive x and north positive y. x y⃗ A west Schematic; labels, not drawing lengths, specify the data. (a) Find its signed Cartesian components and explain the sign of each. (b) Recover the magnitude from the components. Is |Ax| + |Ay| the magnitude? (c) An observer describes the direction as 30◦north of west. Resolve it using that angle and reconcile the results.

Question 1 - Solution A component is a signed projection x y⃗ A west (a) Project onto the specified axes. Ax = 12 cos 150◦= −6 √ 3, Ay = 12 sin 150◦= 6 m Ax = A cos θ = −6 √ 3 m ≈−10.39 m and Ay = A sin θ = 6.00 m. The westward projection is negative; the northward projection is positive. A negative component does not make the magnitude negative. (b) Use the right triangle. A = √ 108 + 36 = 12 m , |Ax| + |Ay| = 6( √ 3 + 1) m > A √ A2x + A2y = √108 + 36 = 12 m. The sum of absolute components is 6( √ 3 + 1) m ≈16.39 m; that is the length of an axis-aligned two-leg route, not the straight arrow. (c) Change the reference direction, not the vector. Ax = −12 cos 30◦= −6 √ 3, Ay = 12 sin 30◦= 6 m From west, the horizontal leg is adjacent: Ax = −12 cos 30◦= −6 √ 3 m and Ay = 12 sin 30◦= 6 m. The signs come from the quadrant. Substituting 30◦blindly into formulas referenced to positive x would give the wrong direction.

Question 1

A component is a signed projection

A displacement has magnitude 12 m and direction 150∘150^\circ counterclockwise from the positive xx axis. The axes are perpendicular, with east positive xx and north positive yy.

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

  1. Find its signed Cartesian components and explain the sign of each.

  2. Recover the magnitude from the components. Is |Ax|+|Ay||A_x|+|A_y| the magnitude?

  3. An observer describes the direction as 30∘30^\circ north of west. Resolve it using that angle and reconcile the results.

Question 1 - Solution

A component is a signed projection

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Project onto the specified axes.

Ax=12cos⁡150∘=−63,Ay=12sin⁡150∘=6mA_x=12\cos150^\circ=-6\sqrt3,\quad A_y=12\sin150^\circ=6\quad\mathrm m Ax=Acos⁡θ=−63m≈−10.39mA_x=A\cos\theta=-6\sqrt3\ \mathrm m\approx-10.39\ \mathrm m and Ay=Asin⁡θ=6.00mA_y=A\sin\theta=6.00\ \mathrm m. The westward projection is negative; the northward projection is positive. A negative component does not make the magnitude negative.

(b) Use the right triangle.

A=108+36=12m,|Ax|+|Ay|=6(3+1)m>A\boxed{A=\sqrt{108+36}=12\,\mathrm m},\quad|A_x|+|A_y|=6(\sqrt3+1)\,\mathrm m>A Ax2+Ay2=108+36=12m\sqrt{A_x^2+A_y^2}=\sqrt{108+36}=12\ \mathrm m. The sum of absolute components is 6(3+1)m≈16.39m6(\sqrt3+1)\ \mathrm m\approx16.39\ \mathrm m; that is the length of an axis-aligned two-leg route, not the straight arrow.

(c) Change the reference direction, not the vector.

Ax=−12cos⁡30∘=−63,Ay=12sin⁡30∘=6mA_x=-12\cos30^\circ=-6\sqrt3,\quad A_y=12\sin30^\circ=6\quad\mathrm m From west, the horizontal leg is adjacent: Ax=−12cos⁡30∘=−63A_x=-12\cos30^\circ=-6\sqrt3 m and Ay=12sin⁡30∘=6A_y=12\sin30^\circ=6 m. The signs come from the quadrant. Substituting 30∘30^\circ blindly into formulas referenced to positive xx would give the wrong direction.
