Question 9 - Solution The logarithmic mean is the effective temperature for reversible heat transfer T 1/T (a) Method and calculation Q = C(T2 −T1), ∆S = C ln(T2/T1). Teff= T2 −T1 ln(T2/T1) = 300 ln 2 ≈432.809 K. (b) Interpretation and further calculation 1 T2 < 1 T2 −T1 ∫T2 T1 dT T < 1 T1 ⇒T1 < Teff< T2. lim T2→T1 T2 −T1 ln T2 −ln T1 = T1, (T1 + T2)/2 = 450 K. The effective temperature weights the incremental entropy transfer, so it differs from the arithmetic mean. Question 9

The logarithmic mean is the effective temperature for reversible heat transfer

A body of constant heat capacity C=100C=100 J/K warms reversibly from T1=300T_1=300 K to T2=600T_2=600 K. Define TeffT_{\mathrm{eff}} by ΔS=Q/Teff\Delta S=Q/T_{\mathrm{eff}}.

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

  1. Derive TeffT_{\mathrm{eff}} and calculate its value.

  2. Show that T1<Teff<T2T_1<T_{\mathrm{eff}}<T_2 and that the limit as T2→T1T_2\to T_1 is T1T_1. Compare it with the arithmetic mean.

Question 9 - Solution

The logarithmic mean is the effective temperature for reversible heat transfer

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Method and calculation

Q=C(T2−T1),ΔS=Cln⁡(T2/T1).Q=C(T_2-T_1),\quad\Delta S=C\ln(T_2/T_1).Teff=T2−T1ln⁡(T2/T1)=300ln⁡2≈432.809K.T_{\mathrm{eff}}=\frac{T_2-T_1}{\ln(T_2/T_1)}=\frac{300}{\ln2}\approx432.809\,\mathrm K.

(b) Interpretation and further calculation

1T2<1T2−T1∫T1T2dTT<1T1⇒T1<Teff<T2.\frac1{T_2}<\frac1{T_2-T_1}\int_{T_1}^{T_2}\frac{dT}{T}<\frac1{T_1}\ \Rightarrow\ T_1<T_{\mathrm{eff}}<T_2.limT2→T1T2−T1ln⁡T2−ln⁡T1=T1,(T1+T2)/2=450K.\lim_{T_2\to T_1}\frac{T_2-T_1}{\ln T_2-\ln T_1}=T_1,\quad(T_1+T_2)/2=450\,\mathrm K.The effective temperature weights the incremental entropy transfer, so it differs from the arithmetic mean.

Physical check
