Question 9 A network of state differences exposes an inconsistent measurement Use ∆U = Q −W, where Q is heat into the system and W is work done by it. Measurements give, from A to B, QAB = 600 J and WAB = 200 J; from B to C, QBC = −100 J and WBC = 150 J. A separate C-to-A run reports QCA = −200 J and WCA = −100 J. A B C Schematic; labels, not drawing lengths, specify the data. (a) Calculate the implied three internal-energy changes and test their sum around A–B–C–A. (b) If both first two runs and WCA are correct, infer the corrected QCA. State why the inconsistency cannot be repaired by choosing a different zero for internal energy.

Question 9 - Solution A network of state differences exposes an inconsistent measurement A B C (a) Method and calculation ∆UAB = 400 J, ∆UBC = −250 J, ∆UCA = −100 J. ∑ loop ∆U = 400 −250 −100 = 50 J̸ = 0. The reported state differences cannot all be correct. (b) Interpretation and further calculation ∆UCA = −(400 −250) = −150 J. QCA = ∆UCA + WCA = −150 −100 = −250 J. Replacing U by U + U0 leaves every difference unchanged, so the 50 J loop residual cannot be removed by a reference shift. Question 9

A network of state differences exposes an inconsistent measurement

Use ΔU=Q−W\Delta U=Q-W, where QQ is heat into the system and WW is work done by it. Measurements give, from A to B, QAB=600Q_{AB}=600 J and WAB=200W_{AB}=200 J; from B to C, QBC=−100Q_{BC}=-100 J and WBC=150W_{BC}=150 J. A separate C-to-A run reports QCA=−200Q_{CA}=-200 J and WCA=−100W_{CA}=-100 J.

  1. Calculate the implied three internal-energy changes and test their sum around A–B–C–A.

  2. If both first two runs and WCAW_{CA} are correct, infer the corrected QCAQ_{CA}. State why the inconsistency cannot be repaired by choosing a different zero for internal energy.

Question 9 - Solution

A network of state differences exposes an inconsistent measurement

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Method and calculation

ΔUAB=400J,ΔUBC=−250J,ΔUCA=−100J.\Delta U_{AB}=400\,\mathrm J,\quad\Delta U_{BC}=-250\,\mathrm J,\quad\Delta U_{CA}=-100\,\mathrm J.∑loopΔU=400−250−100=50J≠0.\sum_{\mathrm{loop}}\Delta U=400-250-100=50\,\mathrm J\ne0.The reported state differences cannot all be correct.

(b) Interpretation and further calculation

ΔUCA=−(400−250)=−150J.\Delta U_{CA}=-(400-250)=-150\,\mathrm J.QCA=ΔUCA+WCA=−150−100=−250J.Q_{CA}=\Delta U_{CA}+W_{CA}=-150-100=-250\,\mathrm J.Replacing UU by U+U0U+U_0 leaves every difference unchanged, so the 50 J loop residual cannot be removed by a reference shift.

Physical check

State-function differences telescope to zero over a closed loop independently of path-dependent heat and work.
