Question 2 Reversing propagation reverses the pressure-velocity sign A leftward pressure wave is p = P cos(kx + ωt) with P = 0.80 Pa, f = 200 Hz and Z = 400 Pa s/m. Use the linear momentum equation ρ0ut = −px and ω = ck. x p c Schematic profile; scales are set by the stated data. (a) Derive u(x, t), taking no constant background flow. (b) Find a zero-mean displacement field and its amplitude. What is the sign of particle velocity at a positive pressure crest?

Question 2 - Solution Reversing propagation reverses the pressure-velocity sign x p c (a) Method and calculation With Ψ = kx + ωt, the momentum equation gives ρ0ut = kP sin Ψ, u = −kP ρ0ω cos Ψ = −P Z cos Ψ. The negative sign is required by leftward propagation, even though pressure is a scalar. (b) Interpretation and further calculation Integrate u = ξt without a static displacement offset: ξ = −P Zω sin Ψ, a = 0.80 400(2π)(200) = 1.592 µm. At p = +P, u = −P/Z = −2.0 × 10−3 m/s. Particle motion is leftward at this compression crest, consistent with propagation. Physical check The amplitudes still satisfy pm = Zum; it is the signed field relation that changes.

Question 2 - Solution

Reversing propagation reverses the pressure-velocity sign

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Method and calculation

With Ψ=kx+ωt\Psi=kx+\omega t, the momentum equation givesρ0ut=kPsin⁡Ψ,u=−kPρ0ωcos⁡Ψ=−PZcos⁡Ψ.\rho_0u_t=kP\sin\Psi,\qquad u=-\frac{kP}{\rho_0\omega}\cos\Psi=-\frac PZ\cos\Psi.The negative sign is required by leftward propagation, even though pressure is a scalar.

(b) Interpretation and further calculation

Integrate u=ξtu=\xi_t without a static displacement offset:ξ=−PZωsin⁡Ψ,a=0.80400(2π)(200)=1.592μm.\xi=-\frac{P}{Z\omega}\sin\Psi,\qquad a=\frac{0.80}{400(2\pi)(200)}=1.592\,\mu\mathrm m.At p=+Pp=+P, u=−P/Z=−2.0×10−3m/su=-P/Z=-2.0\times10^{-3}\,\mathrm{m/s}. Particle motion is leftward at this compression crest, consistent with propagation.

Physical check

The amplitudes still satisfy pm=Zump_m=Z u_m; it is the signed field relation that changes.
