Ignore mass loss in calculating specific orbital energy. vp ∆⃗v rp Hyperbolic arrival is slowed at periapsis into the dashed circular orbit; the burn opposes velocity. Question 9 - Solution Hyperbolic arrival requires energy removal before circular capture vp ∆⃗v rp (a) Derivation and calculation Before the burn, specific energy is ϵi = v2 ∞/2. At periapsis, v2 p 2 −µ rp = v2 ∞ 2 . With v∞= vc and v2 c = µ/rp, vp = √ 3vc , ∆v = vp −vc = ( √ 3 −1)vc . (b) Result and interpretation The initial and final specific energies are ϵi = +1 2v2 c, ϵf = −1 2v2 c. Circular capture removes ϵi −ϵf = v2 c . Reaching the parabolic threshold removes only v2 c/2; strictly negative energy requires a little more than that. Circularization requires the full v2 c. Physical check The burn energy change also equals 1 2(v2 c −3v2 c) = −v2 c, since the position is unchanged.

Question 9

Hyperbolic arrival requires energy removal before circular capture

A probe approaches a spherical source with speed at infinity v∞v_\infty. At periapsis rpr_p it makes a short retrograde burn into a circular orbit there. Let vc=μ/rpv_c=\sqrt{\mu/r_p} and take v∞=vcv_\infty=v_c. Ignore mass loss in calculating specific orbital energy.

  2. Find the specific orbital energy removed and compare with the energy needed merely to reach the zero-energy escape threshold.

Question 9 - Solution

Hyperbolic arrival requires energy removal before circular capture

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

Before the burn, specific energy is ϵi=v∞2/2\epsilon_i=v_\infty^2/2. At periapsis, vp22−μrp=v∞22.\frac{v_p^2}{2}-\frac\mu{r_p}=\frac{v_\infty^2}{2}. With v∞=vcv_\infty=v_c and vc2=μ/rpv_c^2=\mu/r_p, vp=3vc,Δv=vp−vc=(3−1)vc.\boxed{v_p=\sqrt3v_c},\qquad \boxed{\Delta v=v_p-v_c=(\sqrt3-1)v_c}.

(b) Result and interpretation

The initial and final specific energies are ϵi=+12vc2,ϵf=−12vc2.\epsilon_i=+\frac12v_c^2,\qquad \epsilon_f=-\frac12v_c^2. Circular capture removes ϵi−ϵf=vc2.\boxed{\epsilon_i-\epsilon_f=v_c^2}. Reaching the parabolic threshold removes only vc2/2v_c^2/2; strictly negative energy requires a little more than that. Circularization requires the full vc2v_c^2.

Physical check

The burn energy change also equals 12(vc2−3vc2)=−vc2\tfrac12(v_c^2-3v_c^2)=-v_c^2, since the position is unchanged.
