Question 3 - Solution Conserved angular momentum fixes the speed ratio at the apsides M vp va (a) Derivation and calculation At an apsis, ˙r = 0, so the entire velocity is transverse. Conservation of angular momentum gives mrpvp = mrava, (2R)vp = (5R)va. va = 2 5vp . (b) Result and interpretation At an arbitrary point, decompose velocity:⃗ v = ˙rˆr + r ˙θˆθ, L = mr(r ˙θ) = mrvt. Therefore rvt = L/m = constant , v2 = ˙r2 + v2 t . Using rv would incorrectly include radial motion in angular momentum. Physical check The greater apoapsis distance corresponds to the lower apsis speed, with equal products rpvp = rava.

Question 3

Conserved angular momentum fixes the speed ratio at the apsides

A satellite has periapsis distance 2R2R and apoapsis distance 5R5R. Its periapsis speed is vpv_p. No noncentral force acts.

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

  1. Find its apoapsis speed from angular momentum conservation.

  2. Explain why the same formula rv=constantrv=\text{constant} cannot generally use total speed at an arbitrary intermediate point.

Question 3 - Solution

Conserved angular momentum fixes the speed ratio at the apsides

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

At an apsis, ṙ=0\dot r=0, so the entire velocity is transverse. Conservation of angular momentum gives mrpvp=mrava,(2R)vp=(5R)va.mr_pv_p=mr_av_a,\qquad (2R)v_p=(5R)v_a. va=25vp.\boxed{v_a=\frac25v_p}.

(b) Result and interpretation

At an arbitrary point, decompose velocity: v→=ṙr̂+rθ̇θ̂,L=mr(rθ̇)=mrvt.\vec v=\dot r\hat r+r\dot\theta\hat\theta, \qquad L=mr(r\dot\theta)=mr v_t. Therefore rvt=L/m=constant,v2=ṙ2+vt2.\boxed{rv_t=L/m=\text{constant}},\qquad v^2=\dot r^2+v_t^2. Using rvrv would incorrectly include radial motion in angular momentum.

Physical check

The greater apoapsis distance corresponds to the lower apsis speed, with equal products rpvp=ravar_pv_p=r_av_a.
