Question 9 Two field measurements can identify two fixed source masses Point sources M1 and M2 lie at x = 0 and x = 3a. At x = a, the signed field is zero. At x = −a, its rightward magnitude is 5GM0/(4a2), where M0 is a reference mass. x M1 M2 0 3a Sources lie on the horizontal axis; marked positions define the geometry. (a) Infer M1 and M2. Question 9 - Solution Two field measurements can identify two fixed source masses x M1 M2 0 3a (a) Derivation and calculation Normalize fields by G/a2. The two measurements give −M1 + M2 4 = 0, M1 + M2 16 = 5 4M0. From the first equation M2 = 4M1, hence 5 4M1 = 5 4M0, M1 = M0, M2 = 4M0 . (b) Result and interpretation Substitution into the original signed equations gives g(a) = GM0 a2 ( −1 + 4 4 ) = 0, g(−a) = GM0 a2 ( 1 + 4 16 ) = 5GM0 4a2 > 0. The measurement equations are independent, so both source masses are determined. Physical check Both inferred masses are positive and both measured directions are reproduced.

Question 9

Two field measurements can identify two fixed source masses

Point sources M1M_1 and M2M_2 lie at x=0x=0 and x=3ax=3a. At x=ax=a, the signed field is zero. At x=−ax=-a, its rightward magnitude is 5GM0/(4a2)5GM_0/(4a^2), where M0M_0 is a reference mass.

  2. Check the result against both signed field equations.

Question 9 - Solution

Two field measurements can identify two fixed source masses

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

Normalize fields by G/a2G/a^2. The two measurements give −M1+M24=0,M1+M216=54M0.-M_1+\frac{M_2}{4}=0,\qquad M_1+\frac{M_2}{16}=\frac54M_0. From the first equation M2=4M1M_2=4M_1, hence 54M1=54M0,M1=M0,M2=4M0.\frac54M_1=\frac54M_0,\qquad \boxed{M_1=M_0,\quad M_2=4M_0}.

(b) Result and interpretation

Substitution into the original signed equations gives g(a)=GM0a2(−1+44)=0,g(a)=\frac{GM_0}{a^2}\left(-1+\frac44\right)=0, g(−a)=GM0a2(1+416)=5GM04a2>0.g(-a)=\frac{GM_0}{a^2}\left(1+\frac4{16}\right) =\frac{5GM_0}{4a^2}>0. The measurement equations are independent, so both source masses are determined.

Physical check

Both inferred masses are positive and both measured directions are reproduced.
