Question 9 A torsion balance measures a small gravitational force through a couple A torsion balance has two small masses m at opposite ends of a light horizontal rod, each distance ℓfrom the pivot. Two source masses M each attract one small mass perpendicularly to the rod from distance r, producing torques in the same sense. Neglect cross-attractions. The fiber restoring torque is κθ. Plan view; both gravitational forces turn the rod in the same sense. (a) Derive an expression for G from the equilibrium angle. (b) For κθ = 8.0 × 10−9 N m, ℓ= .10 m, r = .050 m, M = 10 kg and m = .15 kg, infer G.

Question 9 - Solution A torsion balance measures a small gravitational force through a couple (a) Derivation and calculation Each source supplies F = GMm/r2 perpendicular to a lever arm ℓ. Both moments have the same sign: τg = ℓF + ℓF = 2ℓGMm r2 . Static torque balance requires κθ = τg, G = κθr2 2ℓMm . (b) Result and interpretation Substituting the supplied measurements, G = (8.0 × 10−9)(.050)2 2(.10)(10)(.15) = 6.67 × 10−11 N m2/kg2 . The inferred force on either end is F = κθ 2ℓ= 4.0 × 10−8 N. Physical check The two end moments reproduce 8.0 × 10−9 N m; neglected cross-attractions belong to the model assumptions.

Question 9

A torsion balance measures a small gravitational force through a couple

A torsion balance has two small masses mm at opposite ends of a light horizontal rod, each distance ℓ\ell from the pivot. Two source masses MM each attract one small mass perpendicularly to the rod from distance rr, producing torques in the same sense. Neglect cross-attractions. The fiber restoring torque is κθ\kappa\theta.

  2. For κθ=8.0×10−9Nm\kappa\theta=8.0\times10^{-9}\,\mathrm{N\,m}, ℓ=.10m\ell=.10\,\mathrm m, r=.050mr=.050\,\mathrm m, M=10kgM=10\,\mathrm{kg} and m=.15kgm=.15\,\mathrm{kg}, infer GG.

Question 9 - Solution

A torsion balance measures a small gravitational force through a couple

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

Each source supplies F=GMm/r2F=GMm/r^2 perpendicular to a lever arm ℓ\ell. Both moments have the same sign: τg=ℓF+ℓF=2ℓGMmr2.\tau_g=\ell F+\ell F=\frac{2\ell GMm}{r^2}. Static torque balance requires κθ=τg,G=κθr22ℓMm.\kappa\theta=\tau_g,\qquad \boxed{G=\frac{\kappa\theta r^2}{2\ell Mm}}.

(b) Result and interpretation

Substituting the supplied measurements, G=(8.0×10−9)(.050)22(.10)(10)(.15)=6.67×10−11Nm2/kg2.G=\frac{(8.0\times10^{-9})(.050)^2}{2(.10)(10)(.15)} =\boxed{6.67\times10^{-11}\ \mathrm{N\,m^2/kg^2}}. The inferred force on either end is F=κθ2ℓ=4.0×10−8N.F=\frac{\kappa\theta}{2\ell}=4.0\times10^{-8}\ \mathrm N.

Physical check

The two end moments reproduce 8.0×10−9Nm8.0\times10^{-9}\,\mathrm{N\,m}; neglected cross-attractions belong to the model assumptions.
