Question 7 Relative acceleration includes motion of both gravitating bodies Two isolated point masses M and m are released from rest a distance r0 apart. Let r be their separation, initially along one fixed line. M m r Point masses or spherical bodies; separation is measured between centers. (a) Find ¨r initially and a short-time approximation for r(t). (b) If M = 4m, find how their individual displacements toward one another divide the decrease in separation.

Question 7 - Solution Relative acceleration includes motion of both gravitating bodies M m r (a) Derivation and calculation Choose r = xm −xM > 0. The two accelerations give ¨xm = −GM r2 , ¨xM = Gm r2 , ¨r(0) = −G(M + m) r2 0 . With initial relative speed zero, r(t) ≃r0 −G(M + m) 2r2 0 t2 , G(M + m)t2 r3 0 ≪1. (b) Result and interpretation Let δ = r0 −r and let sM, sm be positive inward displacements. Then sM + sm = δ, MsM = msm. For M = 4m, sM = δ/5, sm = 4δ/5 . The approximation must include the motion of both bodies. Physical check Both inward displacements are positive and their mass-weighted signed sum is zero.

Question 7

Relative acceleration includes motion of both gravitating bodies

Two isolated point masses MM and mm are released from rest a distance r0r_0 apart. Let rr be their separation, initially along one fixed line.

  1. Find r̈\ddot r initially and a short-time approximation for r(t)r(t).

  2. If M=4mM=4m, find how their individual displacements toward one another divide the decrease in separation.

Question 7 - Solution

Relative acceleration includes motion of both gravitating bodies

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

Choose r=xm−xM>0r=x_m-x_M>0. The two accelerations give ẍm=−GMr2,ẍM=Gmr2,r̈(0)=−G(M+m)r02.\ddot x_m=-\frac{GM}{r^2},\quad \ddot x_M=\frac{Gm}{r^2},\quad \boxed{\ddot r(0)=-\frac{G(M+m)}{r_0^2}}. With initial relative speed zero, r(t)≃r0−G(M+m)2r02t2,G(M+m)t2r03≪1.\boxed{r(t)\simeq r_0-\frac{G(M+m)}{2r_0^2}t^2},\qquad \frac{G(M+m)t^2}{r_0^3}\ll1.

(b) Result and interpretation

Let δ=r0−r\delta=r_0-r and let sM,sms_M,s_m be positive inward displacements. Then sM+sm=δ,MsM=msm.s_M+s_m=\delta,\qquad Ms_M=ms_m. For M=4mM=4m, sM=δ/5,sm=4δ/5.\boxed{s_M=\delta/5,\qquad s_m=4\delta/5}. The approximation must include the motion of both bodies.

Physical check

Both inward displacements are positive and their mass-weighted signed sum is zero.
