Question 4 - Solution The force direction follows the displacement toward the source x/a y/a M m (a) Derivation and calculation The displacement from source to particle is⃗r = a(3ˆi + 4ˆj), with r = 5a. Therefore⃗ Fm = −GMm r3⃗ r = −GMm 125a2 (3ˆi + 4ˆj). Fx = −3GMm 125a2 , Fy = −4GMm 125a2 . (b) Result and interpretation The component norm gives |⃗Fm| = GMm 125a2 √ 32 + 42 = GMm 25a2 = GMm (5a)2 . By action and reaction,⃗ FM = −⃗Fm ,⃗ FM +⃗Fm =⃗0. Physical check Both force components on the test mass are negative, pointing toward the origin.

Question 4

The force direction follows the displacement toward the source

A source MM is at (0,0)(0,0) and a test mass mm is at (3a,4a)(3a,4a), with a>0a>0.

  1. Find the Cartesian gravitational force on mm.

  2. Check its magnitude and find the opposite force on MM.

Question 4 - Solution

The force direction follows the displacement toward the source

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

The displacement from source to particle is r→=a(3î+4ĵ)\vec r=a(3\hat i+4\hat j), with r=5ar=5a. Therefore F→m=−GMmr3r→=−GMm125a2(3î+4ĵ).\vec F_m=-\frac{GMm}{r^3}\vec r =-\frac{GMm}{125a^2}(3\hat i+4\hat j). Fx=−3GMm125a2,Fy=−4GMm125a2.\boxed{F_x=-\frac{3GMm}{125a^2},\quad F_y=-\frac{4GMm}{125a^2}}.

(b) Result and interpretation

The component norm gives |F→m|=GMm125a232+42=GMm25a2=GMm(5a)2.|\vec F_m|=\frac{GMm}{125a^2}\sqrt{3^2+4^2} =\boxed{\frac{GMm}{25a^2}}=\frac{GMm}{(5a)^2}. By action and reaction, F→M=−F→m,F→M+F→m=0→.\boxed{\vec F_M=-\vec F_m},\qquad \vec F_M+\vec F_m=\vec0.

Physical check

Both force components on the test mass are negative, pointing toward the origin.
