Question 7 Bonded members can carry stress with zero external axial load Two equal-length parallel rods are joined by rigid end plates free of external axial load. Rod 1 would freely acquire strain ϵ∗ 1 = .001; rod 2 has ϵ∗ 2 = 0. Their axial rigidities are E1A1 = 2 × 106 N and E2A2 = 106 N. Both share strain ϵ and obey Ni = EiAi(ϵ −ϵ∗ i ). rod 1 rod 2 Schematic; labels, not drawing lengths, specify the data. (a) Find the common strain and both internal forces. Question 7 - Solution Bonded members can carry stress with zero external axial load rod 1 rod 2 (a) Derivation and calculation External axial equilibrium requires N1 + N2 = 0, (2 × 106)(ϵ −.001) + (106)ϵ = 0. Hence ϵ = 2000 3 × 106 = 6.67 × 10−4 . (b) Result and interpretation The resulting internal forces are N1 = (2 × 106)(.0006667 −.001) ≃−667 N , N2 = (106)(.0006667) ≃+667 N . Rod 1 is compressed relative to its preferred expanded length; rod 2 is stretched. Their exact forces are ∓2000/3 N, so N1 + N2 = 0. Physical check The common strain lies between the two free strains, weighted toward the axially stiffer rod.

Question 7

Bonded members can carry stress with zero external axial load

Two equal-length parallel rods are joined by rigid end plates free of external axial load. Rod 1 would freely acquire strain ϵ1*=.001\epsilon_1^*=.001; rod 2 has ϵ2*=0\epsilon_2^*=0. Their axial rigidities are E1A1=2×106NE_1A_1=2\times10^6\,\mathrm N and E2A2=106NE_2A_2=10^6\,\mathrm N. Both share strain ϵ\epsilon and obey Ni=EiAi(ϵ−ϵi*)N_i=E_iA_i(\epsilon-\epsilon_i^*).

Question 7 - Solution

Bonded members can carry stress with zero external axial load

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

External axial equilibrium requires N1+N2=0,N_1+N_2=0, (2×106)(ϵ−.001)+(106)ϵ=0.(2\times10^6)(\epsilon-.001)+(10^6)\epsilon=0. Hence ϵ=20003×106=6.67×10−4.\boxed{\epsilon=\frac{2000}{3\times10^6}=6.67\times10^{-4}}.

(b) Result and interpretation

The resulting internal forces are N1=(2×106)(.0006667−.001)≃−667N,\boxed{N_1=(2\times10^6)(.0006667-.001)\simeq-667\ \mathrm N}, N2=(106)(.0006667)≃+667N.\boxed{N_2=(10^6)(.0006667)\simeq+667\ \mathrm N}. Rod 1 is compressed relative to its preferred expanded length; rod 2 is stretched. Their exact forces are ∓2000/3\mp2000/3 N, so N1+N2=0N_1+N_2=0.

Physical check

The common strain lies between the two free strains, weighted toward the axially stiffer rod.
