Question 3 - Solution Unequal cable angles make the steeper cable carry more tension W 30◦ 60◦ (a) Derivation and calculation The ring balance equations are TR cos 60◦= TL cos 30◦, TL sin 30◦+ TR sin 60◦= W. Therefore TR = √ 3TL, TL = W/2 , TR = √ 3W/2 . (b) Result and interpretation Apply both independent cable limits: W/2 ≤80 ⇒W ≤160 N, √ 3W/2 ≤120 ⇒W ≤80 √ 3 N. Thus Wmax = 80 √ 3 = 139 N . The right cable controls; at this load, TL = 40 √ 3 = 69.3 N and TR = 120 N. Physical check The steeper cable carries the larger tension, as required by horizontal balance.

Question 3

Unequal cable angles make the steeper cable carry more tension

A small ring supports a vertical weight WW. Two massless cables pull from the ring upward-left at 30∘30^\circ and upward-right at 60∘60^\circ to horizontal. Their tension limits are respectively 8080 and 120N120\,\mathrm N.

  2. Find the maximum supported WW and identify the limiting cable.

Question 3 - Solution

Unequal cable angles make the steeper cable carry more tension

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

The ring balance equations are TRcos⁡60∘=TLcos⁡30∘,TLsin⁡30∘+TRsin⁡60∘=W.T_R\cos60^\circ=T_L\cos30^\circ,\qquad T_L\sin30^\circ+T_R\sin60^\circ=W. Therefore TR=3TL,TL=W/2,TR=3W/2.T_R=\sqrt3T_L,\qquad\boxed{T_L=W/2},\quad\boxed{T_R=\sqrt3W/2}.

(b) Result and interpretation

Apply both independent cable limits: W/2≤80⇒W≤160N,W/2\le80\Rightarrow W\le160\ \mathrm N, 3W/2≤120⇒W≤803N.\sqrt3W/2\le120\Rightarrow W\le80\sqrt3\ \mathrm N. Thus Wmax=803=139N.\boxed{W_{\max}=80\sqrt3=139\ \mathrm N}. The right cable controls; at this load, TL=403=69.3T_L=40\sqrt3=69.3 N and TR=120T_R=120 N.

Physical check

The steeper cable carries the larger tension, as required by horizontal balance.
