Question 6 - Solution An applied couple redistributes support reactions without changing total weight 100 N A B 20 N m (a) Derivation and calculation Take upward and counterclockwise positive. Balance gives ∑ Fx = Ax = 0, Ay + By = 100. About A, 4By −100(1) + 20 = 0 =⇒ By = 20 N . Thus Ay = 80 N , Ax = 0 . (b) Result and interpretation Taking moments independently about B, ∑ τB = −4Ay + 100(3) + 20 = −4(80) + 300 + 20 = 0. Without the couple, By = 25 N and Ay = 75 N. The applied 20 N m couple changes them by ∆By = −20/4 = −5 N, ∆Ay = +5 N. Physical check The total upward reaction remains 100 N because a pure couple adds no net force.

Question 6

An applied couple redistributes support reactions without changing total weight

A weightless horizontal beam spans 4m4\,\mathrm m between an ideal pin at AA and a vertical roller at BB. A 100N100\,\mathrm N load acts downward 1m1\,\mathrm m from AA, and a 20Nm20\,\mathrm{N\,m} counterclockwise couple is applied.

Question 6 - Solution

An applied couple redistributes support reactions without changing total weight

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

Take upward and counterclockwise positive. Balance gives ∑Fx=Ax=0,Ay+By=100.\sum F_x=A_x=0,\qquad A_y+B_y=100. About AA, 4By−100(1)+20=0⇒By=20N.4B_y-100(1)+20=0\quad\Longrightarrow\quad\boxed{B_y=20\ \mathrm N}. Thus Ay=80N,Ax=0.\boxed{A_y=80\ \mathrm N},\qquad\boxed{A_x=0}.

(b) Result and interpretation

Taking moments independently about BB, ∑τB=−4Ay+100(3)+20=−4(80)+300+20=0.\sum\tau_B=-4A_y+100(3)+20 =-4(80)+300+20=0. Without the couple, By=25B_y=25 N and Ay=75A_y=75 N. The applied 2020 N m couple changes them by ΔBy=−20/4=−5N,ΔAy=+5N.\Delta B_y=-20/4=-5\ \mathrm N,\quad\Delta A_y=+5\ \mathrm N.

Physical check

The total upward reaction remains 100 N because a pure couple adds no net force.
