Question 10 - Solution The swept-area rate measures angular momentum per unit mass dA⃗ r⃗ v dt (a) Derivation and calculation Over an infinitesimal displacement d⃗r =⃗v dt, the signed swept triangle has area dA = 1 2(⃗r × d⃗r)z. Hence dA dt = 1 2(⃗r ×⃗v)z = Lz 2m, Lz = 2m ˙A . (b) Result and interpretation The counterclockwise area rate is positive: Lz = 2(.50)(.80) = +.800 kg m2/s . At constant rate, ∆t = ∆A ˙A = 2.0 .80 = 2.50 s . Since ˙A = r2 ˙θ/2, constant area rate permits varying angular speed when radius changes. Physical check The units m ˙A are kg m2/s, exactly those of angular momentum.

Question 10 - Solution

The swept-area rate measures angular momentum per unit mass

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

Over an infinitesimal displacement dr→=v→dtd\vec r=\vec v\,dt, the signed swept triangle has area dA=12(r→×dr→)z.dA=\tfrac12(\vec r\times d\vec r)_z. Hence dAdt=12(r→×v→)z=Lz2m,Lz=2mȦ.\frac{dA}{dt}=\tfrac12(\vec r\times\vec v)_z =\frac{L_z}{2m},\qquad\boxed{L_z=2m\dot A}.

(b) Result and interpretation

The counterclockwise area rate is positive: Lz=2(.50)(.80)=+.800kgm2/s.\boxed{L_z=2(.50)(.80)=+.800\ \mathrm{kg\,m^2/s}}. At constant rate, Δt=ΔAȦ=2.0.80=2.50s.\boxed{\Delta t=\frac{\Delta A}{\dot A}=\frac{2.0}{.80}=2.50\ \mathrm s}. Since Ȧ=r2θ̇/2\dot A=r^2\dot\theta/2, constant area rate permits varying angular speed when radius changes.

Physical check

The units mȦm\dot A are kg m2^2/s, exactly those of angular momentum.
