Question 5 - Solution A translating observer measures a different energy partition C vC observer U = 4 m/s (a) Derivation and calculation In the ground frame, |ω| = V/R and I = MR2/2: K = 1 2MV 2 + 1 4MV 2 = 3 4(2)(4)2 = 24 J . In the translating observer frame, V ′ = V −U = 0, while ω′ = ω. Hence K′ = 1 2Iω2 = 1 4(2)(4)2 = 8 J . (b) Result and interpretation The surface now moves with U′ g = −4 m/s. Its contact constraint is V ′ + ωR = U′ g, 0 + ωR = −4. Thus ω = −4/R remains nonzero. Setting ω = −V ′/R = 0 would incorrectly treat the moving ground as stationary. Physical check The energy difference is the original 16 J of center translation; spin energy is unchanged.

  1. Find kinetic energy in ground and observer frames.

  2. Why is substituting the new center speed into ω=V/R\omega=V/R incorrect?

Question 5 - Solution

A translating observer measures a different energy partition

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

In the ground frame, |ω|=V/R|\omega|=V/R and I=MR2/2I=MR^2/2: K=12MV2+14MV2=34(2)(4)2=24J.K=\tfrac12MV^2+\tfrac14MV^2=\boxed{\tfrac34(2)(4)^2=24\ \mathrm J}. In the translating observer frame, V′=V−U=0V'=V-U=0, while ω′=ω\omega'=\omega. Hence K′=12Iω2=14(2)(4)2=8J.\boxed{K'=\tfrac12I\omega^2=\tfrac14(2)(4)^2=8\ \mathrm J}.

(b) Result and interpretation

The surface now moves with Ug′=−4U_g'=-4 m/s. Its contact constraint is V′+ωR=Ug′,0+ωR=−4.V'+\omega R=U_g',\qquad0+\omega R=-4. Thus ω=−4/R\omega=-4/R remains nonzero. Setting ω=−V′/R=0\omega=-V'/R=0 would incorrectly treat the moving ground as stationary.

Physical check

The energy difference is the original 16 J of center translation; spin energy is unchanged.
