Question 10 - Solution A rotating wheel has a whole distribution of rim speeds C vC (a) Derivation and calculation With⃗r = R(cos θˆx + sin θˆy) and ω = −V/R,⃗ v = V (1 + sin θ)ˆx −V cos θˆy. Therefore v2 = V 2[(1 + sin θ)2 + cos2 θ] = 2V 2(1 + sin θ) . (b) Result and interpretation For V > 0, v > V ⇐⇒sin θ > −1 2. Over 0 ≤θ < 2π, the excluded interval is [7π/6, 11π/6], of width 2π/3. Thus f = 2π −2π/3 2π = 2 3 . The equality endpoints have zero arc length and do not affect the fraction. Physical check The formula gives zero at the bottom and 2V at the top, as required by rolling kinematics.

Question 10

A rotating wheel has a whole distribution of rim speeds

A radius-RR wheel rolls right at center speed VV. Label rim position by θ\theta measured counterclockwise from the rightward horizontal radius.

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

  1. Derive the rim speed as a function of θ\theta.

  2. Find the fraction of its circumference whose speed exceeds VV.

Question 10 - Solution

A rotating wheel has a whole distribution of rim speeds

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

(a) Derivation and calculation

With r→=R(cos⁡θx̂+sin⁡θŷ)\vec r=R(\cos\theta\hat x+\sin\theta\hat y) and ω=−V/R\omega=-V/R, v→=V(1+sin⁡θ)x̂−Vcos⁡θŷ.\vec v=V(1+\sin\theta)\hat x-V\cos\theta\hat y. Therefore v2=V2[(1+sin⁡θ)2+cos⁡2θ]=2V2(1+sin⁡θ).v^2=V^2[(1+\sin\theta)^2+\cos^2\theta] =\boxed{2V^2(1+\sin\theta)}.

(b) Result and interpretation

For V>0V>0, v>V⇔sin⁡θ>−12.v>V\Longleftrightarrow\sin\theta>-\tfrac12. Over 0≤θ<2π0\le\theta<2\pi, the excluded interval is [7π/6,11π/6][7\pi/6,11\pi/6], of width 2π/32\pi/3. Thus f=2π−2π/32π=23.\boxed{f=\frac{2\pi-2\pi/3}{2\pi}=\frac23}. The equality endpoints have zero arc length and do not affect the fraction.

Physical check

The formula gives zero at the bottom and 2V2V at the top, as required by rolling kinematics.
