Question 8

Assume ๐‘ป\mathbf T is a differentiable unit tangent and ๐‘ปโ€ฒโ‰ 0โ†’\mathbf T'\ne\vec 0. Prove that the Frenet vectors ๐‘ป,๐‘ต,๐‘ฉ\mathbf T,\mathbf N,\mathbf B form a right-handed orthonormal basis.

Question 8 โ€“ Solution

Strategy Differentiate ๐‘ปโ‹…๐‘ป=1\mathbf T\cdot\mathbf T=1, normalize ๐‘ปโ€ฒ\mathbf T', and use cross-product identities.

Diagram shown in the original SVG worksheet.

Orthogonality Differentiation gives 2๐‘ปโ‹…๐‘ปโ€ฒ=02\mathbf T\cdot\mathbf T'=0. Since ๐‘ต=๐‘ปโ€ฒ/โˆฅ๐‘ปโ€ฒโˆฅ\mathbf N=\mathbf T'/\|\mathbf T'\|, ๐‘ปโŸ‚๐‘ต\mathbf T\perp\mathbf N, and both are unit.

Binormal Define ๐‘ฉ=๐‘ปร—๐‘ต\mathbf B=\mathbf T\times\mathbf N. The cross product of perpendicular unit vectors is unit and perpendicular to both.

Orientation By definition ๐‘ปร—๐‘ต=๐‘ฉ\mathbf T\times\mathbf N=\mathbf B, so the ordered frame is right-handed. Hence its Gram matrix is the identity and its orientation determinant is +1+1.
